On 15 June, most of Slovenian museums and galleries will be open from 6 p.m. till midnight at no admission charge as part of the annual Museum Summer Night, during which museums and galleries will turn into venues for socializing and fun by running a wide and varied programme of events.
The Museum Summer Night will be held at 80 museums and galleries across Slovenia, including all the major museums and galleries in Ljubljana, joined by numerous other institutions in the fields of arts and culture, cultural heritage, and history.
Each year, the Museum Summer Night presents over 200 events for all age groups attended by 15,000 to 25,000 people. The programme of events includes exhibition openings, presentations of new exhibits, guided exhibition tours (available also in foreign languages), concerts, discussions, creative workshops for all ages, family programmes, interactive experiments and experiences, film screenings, and stage performances. Some of the institutions involved in the project also offer books and works of art at discount prices.
The purpose of presenting such a large programme of free events, offering a range of new, exciting experiences with a difference, and turning cultural institutions into venues for socializing and fun is to bring museums and their content closer to people.
The Museum Summer Night, organized by the Association of Slovenian Museums, is the largest promotional campaign of Slovenian museum institutions. It was first launched in 2003 on the initiative of Ljubljana’s International Centre of Graphic Arts, which has co-organized most of the Museum Summer Nights since. Museums on a Summer night 2013 is organised by Technical Museum of Slovenia’s team.
