GUIDED TOURS FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED

The museum path Please Touch is dedicated to our blind and visually impaired visitors as well as all other curious and inquiring souls who want to explore and get to know our technical heritage with their senses.
The first section of the path presents the history of postal services from ancient times to the present day. Children can touch a milestone that once stood next to a Roman road, informing travellers how far away everything was. They can read the legend of Saint Ulrich on a mediaeval scroll, learn how quickly messages spread in the past, hear the proclamation of a town crier, listen to the melodies of the post horn and touch different types of writing utensils. In 1919 the Slovenes issued our first postage stamps, the Verigar series. The museum has an enlarged stamp from this series that children can touch. The collection also includes various means of transport, postal parcels, a bump table, mail bags and postbags.
The last part of the exhibition offers an insight into the history of telecommunications from telegraphs to smartphones. Children can use a Morse telegraph and telex, try out manual, automatic and digital telephone exchanges and remember their first mobile phone. Only a few years ago, it was mainly blind and visually impaired people who used to work as telephone operators in telephone exchanges. The exhibition also offers children the opportunity to hear a brief history of the first mobile phones and to touch the 3D model of the world’s first mobile phone.
The museum path Please Touch is a cooperation with the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana.
