An outdoor panel exhibition A call from the telephone booth is on display along the Gallus Embankment in Ljubljana from September 28 to November 13 2026. The exhibition encapsulates a significant chapter in the history of Slovenian telecommunications and highlights the role public phone booths played in everyday life during the last century.

The development of public telephone booths in the region began in 1897 with the installation of the first public booth at the Post Office Palace in Ljubljana. For decades, these units served as vital infrastructure and the sole link to the outside world for many individuals and communities—particularly before the telephone network had extended to individual households. Beyond showcasing technological progress, the exhibition sheds light on the significant contributions of Slovenian manufacturers and top industrial designers who shaped the distinctive appearance and functionality of these domestic booths. The exhibition also addresses the modern-day role of these structures; while the rise of mobile telephony caused them to lose their primary function, they are finding new, innovative uses in urban spaces (such as street libraries or memorial points) and remain an important symbol of a bygone era.
